Type Approval is a certificate granted to a product that meets a minimum set of regulatory, technical standards and safety requirements applied in the country. Generally, type approval is required before a product is allowed to be sold or exported into the country. Telecom Type Approval is the term for the process of determining and registering the kind of equipment that can be brought, sold or used in the country without causing interference or long or short-term damage to the network.

In each country there is a dedicated authority responsible for Telecommunications equipments Type Approval. The procedures followed in TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) in the MENA region for Equipment Type Approval are mostly the same with slight differences in the requirements.

All Telecommunication and IT Equipments are subject to Type Approval procedure. Telecommunications Type Approval Policy covers all types of Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment. Such equipment is referred to as Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (“RTTE”).

TRAs in the MENA region adopt European standards and thus they require the test reports to be according to the European Standards.

Most the documents are the same:

1. Technical Description of the equipment – Datasheets.

2. Radio, EMC and Safety Test reports from accredited third party laboratory.

3. Declaration of Conformity from the Manufacturer of the device

4. Declaration of Conformity from third party.

5. User Manual.

6. Photos of the device.

7. For the countries that require a local representative, an authorization letter is required to apply for type approval.

It depends on which country is applying for, and the type of the device. Some countries require a sample for all type approval application, while some other countries require the sample only for certain type of equipments.

1. GSM Equipments.

2. Tracking Devices.

3. WIFI Technology.

4. Tablets.

5. Others (If required).

The Type Approval process and lead time differs from country to another. Most countries require 4 – 6 weeks to approve the device, but some other require more than that.
